With the opening of three new medical colleges in the state this academic session, the number of medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh has gone up to 20 and the number of MBBS seats to 2,750. Counselling for admission to undergraduate medical courses began on Friday.
Out of these 20 medical colleges, 13 are government colleges with 2,000 seats for MBBS, while seven are private with 750 seats. Bhopal also has a branch of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which has 100 seats for MBBS.

For years, the number of government medical colleges in the state stood at six. But, in what is being seen as a major push to overcome the perennial shortage of doctors in the state, seven new medical colleges were opened in the state in the last two years, taking the number of MBBS seats in government colleges to 2,000. In 2017, Madhya Pradesh had only 800 MBBS seats and the last medical college sanctioned was Bundelkhand Medical College that had come up in Sagar as far back as 2009.

The three new medical colleges, which will have 125 MBBS seats each this academic session, are in Chhindwara, Shivpuri and Shahdol. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has already issued the Letter of Permission (LoP) for admission in these medical colleges. Four more medical colleges that started admitting students in 2018 are in Ratlam, Vidisha, Datia and Khandwa. While Ratlam and Vidisha medical colleges had 150 seats each, the other two medical colleges had admitted 100 students.

Incidentally, all the new medical colleges have been sanctioned in either hometown or constituency of Congress and BJP stalwarts.

“In fact, five of the new medical colleges, except for Ratlam and Vidisha, have 100 MBBS seats each. Ratlam and Vidisha have a sanctioned strength of 150 seats each. But, after the Union and the state government decided to provide 10 per cent additional quota to students from economically weaker sections, MCI decided to raise seats in all the medical colleges by 25 per cent to offset the impact of additional quota for general category students,” said Dr Rajendra Sharma, joint director (in-charge admission) at Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

Sharma said that the total MBBS seats in the government medical colleges stood at 1,300 previous year, which should have gone up to 1,600 with 300 additional seats in three new medical colleges, which have come up this academic session. But with the increase of 25 per cent, the total MBBS seats in 13 government medical colleges would go up to 2,000 and 6,750 additional seats in seven functional private medical colleges in the state.

Among the government medical colleges, 85 per cent domicile of MP, who clear NEET, would get admission, while 15 per cent seats would go to students from other states under the All India quota.
